I've discovered a very nice tool by Google called Sketchup. I guess it's been around for a while, but it's a free 3D drafting program that some comic book artists evidently use to craft reusable background scenery as references. Naturally, one of the first things I looked for in the Sketchup 3D Warehouse (a huge collection of user submitted models, including a few that I don't believe could have been made in the program itself and were possibly imported then saved) was a gallows. There are a couple, and the first result is an exceedingly good one. However, as much as I love the classic complicated trapdoor gallows, there is another that I prefer. Ever since a field trip to some American Civil War fort in middle school, I fell in love with the front drop type gallows, where rather than the whole complicated lever activated trapdoor, some guy has to hammer out a large post that supports the front half of the platform, which is on a hinge. Regardless of whether there is to be a long or short drop, the victim will be much more visible to spectators, unlike the trapdoor gallows, where they'll be in the center of the platform and surrounded by supports. Although the even simpler mechanism of standing the victim on a barrel/box would be even more crowd-pleasing, I still prefer a raised gallows, where the condemned must ascend a flight of stairs to reach their fate.

As such, I have resolved to use Sketchup to render the gallows upon which Mary Surratt and three other Lincoln assassination conspirators were hanged. I found a huge jpeg of the event that I am using to attempt to measure dimensions as accurately as possible. This gallows had room for four victims, and was of the type I earlier described. The one I saw in that fort only had room for one. Once I have that done, I'll have the perfect reference piece for a series of drawings I think I may start later on, taking me back to the world of a certain pirate character I'd previously drawn long before I ever knew anything about her story.

Ehhh...

So despite it existing for several years without complaint, and being one of my most :fav:ed and commented upon works, one person whines and the Evil Queen Zelda and Samus piece is now gone. Oddly enough, so is my previously most recent journal entry, which had absolutely nothing to do with it.

On another topic, sorry to say I still haven't drawn anything new in a very long time. If anyone's interested, I'm playing at a private Ragnarok Online server called RaiRO. Pretty interesting place but could use more people.

Edit: Ok, I think I'm close to starting to draw again, but it'll probably be some tame stuff for a while. If anyone is looking for a decent game to mindlessly occupy your free time, I'd really like if you'd consider the RO server I mentioned previously. It seems that attracting new players is a tough proposition these days unless you have a lot of advertising money (to spend advertising on a free server :P) and you can't bump your way up the server lists without a bunch of players to post new reviews. If anyone is interested, RaiRO finally has its own proper website and forums at

There's a bit of a download involved, but it's worth your time. It's a good but small group of people at the moment. It's a bit smaller than usual due to the end of summer school transition too.

Back to Drawing

:bulletblue: Journal

Ok, so as you've seen, I've started drawing again, for the most part. I still haven't quite found a real job yet, and my current employment shall remain out of this discussion, as it is not the most pleasant topic. I've still yet to pass the Pennsylvania Bar Exam after several tries as well, but I've gotten used to it by now.

Next up on my queue of drawings is probably one for *Ayvuir-Blue's pinup competition. Hopefully nobody goes taking my idea for obscure character, (and I'm not really sure they're obscure, but there are only a couple drawings of each that I could find on dA, and a lot of them are those horrid super-fat versions) but I'm thinking that perhaps Mina Hakuba and Yoko Belnades are due for some bondage, being at the mercy of a certain resurrected Dark Lord. For some reason I find Shinto Miko garb very appealing, and so I have the urge to draw Mina chained up in one.

Though plugging games may seem out of character for me, I really recommend that any of you who enjoy a good Sim City-esque game and Capitalism might try out Star Peace. As my earlier references indicate, it is a business/economy simulator game of sorts, wherein you are an investor on a new planet, building up your very own corporate empire of commerce, industries, residentials, and more. It is a MMOG, and with enough support of other players, you can even be elected as a mayor of a city, or president of the planet. I played this game back in college, when it actually had a huge playerbase while being run by its original developer, and later by Sega. Unfortunately, Sega did their best to try and quietly kill off the game after the Dreamcast fiasco and their restructuring. A former player acquired the code from the developers, who seem to want nothing to do with the game any more. Sadly, the playerbase is dwindling rapidly, as there was over a year's time between Sega's killing of the game, and its re-emergence. There is almost no advertisement of the game, despite a supposed link on a site that we've told the administrator doesn't actually exist. Maybe if more players joined the game again, it might convince him to get his butt in gear. There is a free planet server with popups, as well as a subscription-based set of worlds, and you can try out the pay planets for two weeks for free after you first join. Give it a try.

Since the first link probably got lost in that huge paragraph:

Still Here

Ok, so it's been almost a year since my last journal entry, in which I was coincidentally celebrating my first year anniversary of joining dA. I'm sorry for the lack of any new drawings in a while, but life just sort of got in the way for a while. Now I'm trying to start drawing again, but I need to practice a bit, so it may be a while longer yet.

By the way, there's one piece I still need to work on before anything else, but in this whole time my inspiration has been running dry. Can anyone please brainstorm some "romantic" situations for me that don't involve my usual fare?

I suppose I've done reasonably well in terms of artwork in the past year. I've improved at least a little in terms of at least digital stuff. Hopefully, despite my employment, I'll find the time to continue improving over the next year. And there shall definitely have to be more hangings...
